This year the SLCC Education Track is going to look substantially different from previous years. We are putting together a track which will have a large emphasis on Community, Professional Development, and Participatory Interactive Presentations (PIPs). For the program to be a success we are looking for you to PIP up and tell us your story at the SLCC. What are you good at, what can we do better, what does your organization offer that will make that audience rock!
Unlike in previous years, the Education Track will be formally structured into three themes occurring at specific times. Those being:
- Celebratory Membership: Tell us your story. What did you or your organization do well over the past 12-18 months. The focus is on best practices and how, with your help, the community at large has benefited. Maybe it was a teaching practice or student learning achievement, marketing, communications. Anything is fair game that showcases the best of what what your organization has done.
- Funtional Requirement: Tell us what you need. What would make your Second Life better over the next 12-18 months. The focus is on uncovering limitations and how, with the community’s involvement, the programs SL Educators offer could be taken up to the next level. Maybe it is the antithesis of best practices or maybe a research study that needs to be done. Anything is fair game that showcases where you envision education in Second Life going over the next 12-18 months
- Core Competency and Capability: Tell us what is out there. What tools, techniques, networks, opportunities are available, or soon to be available, that people should know about. The focus is on discovery of those support products, services, and practices which will raise the bar on Education in Second Life. Maybe its a new widget or support group, or something totally unique that your organization is hoping to make available. Anything is fair game that showcases supporting infrastructure available to the SL Community as a whole.
The overall objective of the SLCC Education Track is to develop a concept map which will be published at the end of the conference to those people in attendance. This concept map will serve as a roadmap for opportunities and challenges which will raise the bar on education in Second Life. It will help provide your organization with a ton of new ideas, support, and networking opportunities for the coming year.
To participate in this year’s conference submit an outline for your proposal to: http://tr.im/slcc09edu
The SLCC Education Committee is looking for the following proposal types to be received on or before Friday July 17th at 23:59SLT.
- Stand-up Presentation or academic paper (30 minutes)
- Round Table (90 minutes)
- Workshop (30, 60, or 90 minutes)
- Demonstration (30, 60, or 90 minutes)
Each session should be characterized by having some type of participatory interactive component. Don’t worry if you want to submit something that doesn’t have that already built in as the SLCC Education Committee will help you develop an interactive component leading up to the conference.
Note on academic paper submissions: The SLCC Education Committee will not be peer reviewing academic papers or publishing papers as part of the conference. It is assumed that your paper has already passed peer-review and has been published elsewhere prior to being presented at the SLCC.
The committee will review each proposal submitted and commit to a reply no later than Sunday July 19th.
We have other exciting activities planned for the conference but this is really your opportunity to be a part of the SLCC in San Francisco. So please, get those proposals in soon and don’t wait until the last minute because space will be limited and not every proposal submitted may be accepted.
There is a ton more information to come. Questions can be submitted to edtrack@slconvention.org.
The SLCC Education Committee will also be hosting a series of information sessions throughout the months of June and July. So if you would like one of our members to come speak to your group please let us know and we will arrange to have someone available.
Thanks,
Kevin Feenan
